We had an appointment on October 15th with Brooklyns Pediatric Cardiologist Dr. Wiggins. We have been monitoring the pressure in her aortic valve for the past few years. We know that she has been diagnosed with sub-aortic stenosis, which is a membrane or tissue that causes blood to be directed to one side of the aortic valve. This will cause premature failure, leaking, of the aortic valve.
During the appointment, Brooklyn had an EKG and an electrocardiogram performed. The pressure had increased slightly and we now know that her aortic valve is bicuspid, which means instead of having 3 leaflets she only has 2. So Dr. Wiggins sent off the ECHO to the surgical team in Denver.
On November 7th we found out that the surgical team recommends its time for a surgical intervention. The procedure is an open heart surgery which will most likely be performed through the chest cavity. Tissue below the aortic valve will be removed to decrease the turbulence in the valve. This can be a reoccurring defect so we will pray that this surgery will be her last.
Thank you to everyone for your support and prayers. It is and has been very emotional and stressful. There are times of frustration, anger, and sadness. We know that with the help of our friends and family we will get through this time.
God will provide.
